What's an ex voto?
The name of this aesthetic and religious manifestation of art derives from Latin: ex (from) and votum (vow), in other words, a token from some individual for favours received. People who have being conceded the miracle or favour asked after fervorous praying order this to an artist and hang it in a church. They are traditionally painted in plaques of metal or wood.
I've became interested in the practice of ex-voting after an exhibition I had in London at the end of 2007, since then I've continued painting them either as bespoken orders or as gifts for friends. My ex-votos are a collection of real and imaginary stories. I found it as a new branch of my career as a story teller and image maker.
There are still a few available of this series, but you can also order one custom made like the Mexican tradition of ex-votos. |
